Welcome back to all returning students, and welcome new Chinook students and incoming 6th. graders. Our library 8,500 volume collection will be available after Monday, 9/11 for check-outs with a limit of 5 books per student at once. Library programs will be announced as they are scheduled throughout the year.
The library will be open EVERY DAY this year! Open library hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am – 3pm every day except for Wednesday when we’ll close at 1:30 pm. Early morning hours will be from 7:15 – 7:40 am with Ms. Chiturri.
When can your student visit the library?
- At lunch time after spending the first 10 minutes in the Commons. Obtain a pass from Ms. Solid and walk to the library.
- During Tutorial time (2:30-3 pm)
- With their class as scheduled by a Teacher.
- Check-out of books for leisure reading or to support classes: fiction/non-fiction/biographies/picture books/graphic novels and our new collection of books in the World Languages taught at CMS.
- Play fun games like puzzles and board games, take part of a new mini-Maker’s Space (coming soon), make Origami, plan a meal with library cookbooks, discuss books, write book reviews, and earn volunteer hours!
- Quiet study time
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month
All Bellevue School District students have access to school libraries and this month, Chinook students will also have a chance to sign-up for their King County Library System card here at school during their lunch break.
Before the end of September, our King County Library System teen Librarian will be at Chinook during lunch breaks for an all-students Library Card Sign-up.
What does your student need to do to obtain their KCLS library card?
They will need to know the mailing address of their Parent/Guardian and visit the Library Card Sign-Up table during lunch time on a date to be confirmed.
Easy, fast and simple!
What happens next?
Students will have access to all KCLS online services!
KCLS will mail a postcard to the Parent/Guardian at the address provided by the student. Full access to the whole collection will be granted to the student once the adult brings ID and that postcard to one of 49 KCLS branches.
Unfortunately, unincorporated communities of Yarrow Point and Hunts Point are not eligible to apply for a KCLS card at this time.
Volunteers needed for the Scholastic Book Fair!
New this year: The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Chinook and it needs a volunteer to take the lead! The Fair will run from December 4 – 8 at the library, our only book fair for the year, and an important source of funding for our library.
Do you have experience running Scholastic fairs? Are you interested in partnering with a friend to work together? Have you volunteered at your child’s elementary school fair and loved it? We need you!
Year round Volunteers
Volunteers are the heart of institutions and our Chinook Middle School Library is no exception. Our beautiful library has a growing as well as aging book collection. New books are waiting to be processed, displayed, promoted, and shelved while many older books are in need of repairs. Posters and displays need to be designed, created and displayed.
If you love libraries, want to be part of our Parent-Volunteer team and you have an hour a week or some time every once in a while, I'd love to have you come in to help keep the library running and growing. No experience is necessary as I will train you and guide you in the process.
Thank you for your support!
Karina Kawaguchi, MLIS
